Horrorfied
I used to sit up on Friday nights with my dad (when I was little) and watch Creature Features… a program that ran old B movie horror films, creepy flicks and monster movies. Good times… Can’t watch the horror films of today, though… too scary.
Dear Lord, I remember that show, I used to watch it too. Was hosted by the same guy who did the weather on the late news, also ran the kids programming in the afternoon. Wore that silly spaceman outfit while hosting Ultraman, Spectraman, and Star Blazers.
That was KTVU channel 2 … back when they were still an independent station, before they were bought out … was it by Fox or WB, I forget?
Wow, memories. Aaaaaaaaand now I feel even older. Thanks for that. 😛
I never, ever got into horror. My wife loves it, but not me. I wrote a horror story once and scared myself so badly halfway through that stopped. My wife read the story – as far as it went – and said it was the scariest thing she’d ever read. It still freaks her out, and I wrote it 30 years ago.
I watched ONE episode of “Night Gallery” when it was new and got the heebie jeebies for a year. (It was the episode, “The Dead Man”.) After that, the closest I ever got to Rod Serling was “The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau”, which I loved dearly.
Nah, horror’s not for me. Maybe because I can envision it so well.
Hate horror.
Hate, hate, hate, hate horror.
Just because you don’t like the subject matter, doesn’t mean the art itself isn’t good.
In high school a bunch of would get together and watch. We each had one of those suction cup dart guns. When the monster would come on we would loose our deadly force.
Love horror. My problem with modern horror is not so much that they are too scary it’s that they’ve replaced horror and suspense with gore and still call it horror. Or they go the “oh no, it’s not a movie. It’s real footage” ::eye roll::
House at the end of the street was a fantastic deviation from that. Excellent horror movie.
Grey… A lot of folks seem to remember that show! It makes me happy as I have fond memories of it.
Pete… NIght Gallery, on the other hand, scared the *&&^ out of me! I remember the episode with a severed hand that I can still see inching its way down a long hallway, unbeknownst to the guy it was coming after. GAHHHH!
… and to write horror, I imagine you have to be in a certain frame of mind. Blecht… don’t wanna go there.
However, having Randie enjoy something I do not is a bit… cathartic in some ways.
Mary… don’t blame ya.
Chug… I take it you are a fan then? I appreciate suspense… and a good story… but I agree with…
BerryBuzz… in that there is so much “reality gore”… special effects are so well done these days that it’s like seeing it for real… I don’t wanna witness a car crash… why would I wanna witness someone getting axed to death?
BUT… to each their own. I leave the modern horror flick lovers to fill the theater seats.
Rob… Ha! Ha! Can I use that? I love it! It takes the “aaaaaaa!” out of the moment!
Mouse, like most any super-hardcore comic reader, is VERY judgmental about art that doesn’t cater to his particular tastes.
Randie, on the other hand, seems to be able to appreciate the classics (as we’ve seen before. She’d marry Vincent Price if she could!).
Dada… You have more of an insider take on that… I can just see a bunch of hardcore comic readers walking up the aisles at a Con saying “Crap… crap… crap… “… that’s the cartooner in me.
… and heck yah! Randie soooo would!
I have a different take on very young Randie’s memories of watching really scary movies with a parent. I teach 8 year olds, and many are taken to scary movies by their parents because the parents don’t want to get a sitter…”it’s okay, they don’t mind” say the parents, “They know its fake”. But the kids do mind, don’t always know its fake, and are scared.
@berrybuzz, Dada, Brig
That’s because there is a big difference between suspense horror (the “true” horror, IMHO) and gore horror. The former is Vincent Price, the latter is Clive Barker. The former is art and entertaining – the latter is pulp drivel, the horror movie equivalent to Call of Duty: junk they make to feed the masses and make money.
So I’m with ya.
And yeah, if that sounds pretentious, oh-well. 😀
i’m surprised no one can remember Bob Wilkins’ name. he was the host of ktvu’s Creature Features (along with being the channel 2 weatherguy AND the host of that kids’ show in the late ’70’s…)
that’s okay, though, because a couple of days ago I couldn’t remember George Romero’s name….
the episode of night gallery that stands out the most for me starred john astin and Phyllis diller…it was called “Pamela’s voice”…fun little episode…
i’m surprised squid-man hasn’t chimed in on this…horror is his favorite genre…he’s introduced me to a few flicks, I can tell you…
btw…”hanging photographs of zombie corpse dolls at home”…yup…I love Diablo , Diablo 2 and hope to be able to upgrade my computer enough some day to play D3…
a bit off topic but speaking of horror, how would you deal with larisa in this situation? http://www.sandraandwoo.com/2013/05/23/0484-larisas-dirty-secret
perhaps you saw my comment, yes?
For me, horror movies were a guilty pleasure when I was a kid – as in guilty of sneaking into the living room and turning the volume way-down-low….
Channel 56 in Boston….
I would also sneak down and watch Boris Karloff’s Thriller… I remember really liking it as a child, then I watched it again a few years ago… Dang… I had good taste as a kid! 🙂
I still remember the first time that I saw The Haunting…. (The Haunting of Hill House, that is. Creeepyyy!)
The Auld Grump
Actually, I *hate* horror movies. They always seem to invade my brain at 2am. But I can appreciate a well-put-together piece, and why some people love them, even if I won’t watch them myself.
Creature Features… I was sooo little I only remembered the skull with the drippy candles and the weird conversation… and I also remember falling asleep during the program… it was on pretty late. But I knew that YOU’D know Firedome! Well done!
Grump… I feel the OLD B movies were the total best. Just an opinion, of course. Give me my Vinnie Price!
Anatman… don’t get me started on Thomas K… that’s a bad situation right there! Immediate destruction! Anybody got a lighter?
Judy… As a parent, you have to ACT like a parent. Scary movies DO things to kids… you have to be aware and act on their behalf, not on yours!
chug… I’m with you… that is, modern “horror.” I have an active imagination for sure.
Aha! Thanks, Firedome! I could remember his face, even his voice – even though he had a pretty monotone voice, that was just his style and it was still unique. Just couldn’t remember his name.
But such is the plight of the “indie artist” sometimes, even the ones who are tv personalities on an indie station, heh. And I know, I mentioned those same things … he did the weather and the kids’ show. I am pretty sure he actually did all 3 shows on the same set, with just a change of the backdrop.
Was that kids’s show where I got to watch Ultraman, Spectraman, and Star Blazers. Spectraman was my favorite.
