Grute Comic
I was gifted recently with a stack of old comics in plastic bags… many of which are Groo-The Wanderer by Sergio Aragones and Twisted Tales. My gifter, paid tribute to in the opening panel, has my deep gratitude and many hugs… as Groo #1 was in that stack. Now if I can get a Sharpie and the presence of Mr. Aragones…
By the way… this is WAY better than EX-Men #395!
groo was one of my favorites back in the 80’s…along with the teenage mutant ninja turtles and the adolescent radioactive black belt hamsters (yes, there was such a series). got mr. aragones to sign a couple of things back then thanks to a couple of appearences at local comic conventions (one in salinas, another in san jose). a fun guy to listen to, as well.
forgot to mention my all-time fave series from then, though…that would’ve bee albedo anthropomorphics by steve gallacci. man, that guy could airbrush!
At an Anime convention in Iowa(AnimeIowa), Stan Sakai(Usagi Yojimbo) was a guest artist. I got him to sign and draw in a copy of Graphic Novel #1.

steve gave stan his first break. it was in albedo #2 where our favorite lepine ronin made his first appearence.
Book #25: Fox Hunt, is out according to the website. Gotta hunt it down.
If you want to get your Groo copy signed, just send it to me. I see Sergio on occasion at the Animation Guild, and can try and see if he’ll be around anytime soon to sign it.
Either that or just catch him at any of his convention appearances. He’s a super-nice guy!
Being a comic book store owner, we used to get Groo – The Wanderer comics in all the time. (As well as the eight issues of Groo under Pacific Comics and the Eclipse one-shot.) People loved them.
These days, as a former comic book store owner, I have the entire run in near mint condition. Why not mint condition? Because we read them… which is kinda the whole point of owning comics! 😀
…what do you mean, “Slow of mind?”
Ballpoint may be better. Sharpie may soak through.
Just googled Groo, love the illustrations, nice gift.
Did your gifter also tell you about the books first and then make you wait and wait to get ’em?
Nice background in the second panel. Good angle and not over detailed.
Excellent use of ‘Magillah’. I heard Sergio talk of Groo at a panel at Comic-Con ’10. I was living under a rock cause I had no idea what was goin’ on! I love Sergio’s work in MAD, I gotta expand.
Has anyone ever heard of a comic called ” Rock and Rule” ? It came out in the eighties
and even had a cartoon that came out at the same time.
Pete… NO WAY! … it’s the PC comics that I gots. I now have 1-8, the Eclipse ($2… ) and a few Marvels… WOW! Amazing!
Firedome… I saw Mr. Aragones during a quick draw event for Atlantis Fantasy Comics in Santa Cruz… I was too shy to ask for any sort of autograph. Groo is awesome.
Dada… might do that… that would be so awesome.
stick… sharpies do fade… I’d actually use a permanent, NON-fading marker like a Micron. Dey better anyhow. Groo is awesome.
Denny… aw, tanks… it’s a balance of not putting too much info so that it’s too busy and not putting in enough.
Jack… Magillah is a fun word… and notice, it’s properly spelled.
Squid… hmmmm… not I. It makes sense that you would know… you rock guitar player, you!
Joe… yah… I recognize that comic… rabbit chops with swords, yah?
Squid-Man! No way!!!??? Rock and Rule was a comic??? It’s one of my faves as far as animated movies go!!! Now I have to figure out where I can find them if they still exist, my mate absolutely loves that movie too!!! It would be a great gift if I could get him the comics to go with…
