Great Fire
Although the Great Fire of London was devastating, some really good things came out of the catastrophe.
The year before the fire, London lost 80,000 inhabitants to The Plague. After the fire, London never had another instance again. It is speculated that the slums, with the rat (and flea) population, were scorched… thus eliminating The Plague from London entirely.
Another good thing that came out of The Great Fire, was a more beautiful, more incredible St. Paul’s Cathedral, designed by Christopher Wren.
For Randie… her Great Fire lightened her load a bit (whether she sees that or not is another story). The down side of her unfortunate event was that she now has extreme fire fear.
If you want to read up on Randie’s (past) house fire… go here: http://www.webcomicsnation.com/brigtoon/squid/series.php?view=single&ID=155242
Of course, if it was a closer parallel to Randie’s life the fire would have been started by one of Twinkie’s rotten ancestors!
The real shame is that it takes tragedies like the Great Fire to bring about good things like building and fire codes. A more recent parallel is the improvements made after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans.
Interesting backtrack to Randie’s own fire started by the likes of Twinks.
Late one night
When we were all in bed
Old Mrs. Leary
Left a lantern in the shed
And when the cow kicked it over,
She winked her eye and said,
“Therell be a hot time
In the old town, tonight.”
Well, at least Twinkles didn’t burn down the likes of London or Chicago.
Randie should have been careful about what she wished for. Bored and wanting some excitement sure didn’t work out as expected.
Interesting in that Kai’s friend was touring in Zaragoza (wha?, wher?) for only a couple months and yet Randall’s been subletting his apartment for how long now? If the guy’s not coming back, why is she still covering his rent?
Interesting too is that Ryan is looking for a place of his own, and the guy who owned Randie’s old house was rebuilding it himself with the intent of offering it to her when done. That was 3 years ago. Wonder if he’s finished it yet.
A bakery on Pudding Lane. How choice is that?
Oh great, Randie’s going to have nightmares tonight.
So why am I now thinking of the rats in the ratatouille movie?
Yat… Uh, they built up great new levees protecting New Orleans that allowed all those in the surrounding areas to once again have their homes flooded. I guess you can’t be all things to all folks.
stick-figurer: Are you getting your information from the “if it bleeds, it leads” national media? Come down here if you want to know what’s really happening.
Yat… You know of the network then. Ha. Actually, it’s more like EVERY network, newspaper, magazine and news site. And, yes, I saw videos of people returning to their still sunken homes and vehicles and holding back tears as they claimed total losses and put the blame squarely on the new levees forcing the flood waters into their neighboring towns.
Wow, New Orleans. I take it that you weathered the storm successfully. Congrats, that storm looked terrible on the satellite maps. Out of curiosity, how’d that Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie rebuilding project work out? At first it was a huge news story, especially so when they made interview appearances, and then just as quick it was over, just like all of yesterday’s news, not to be mentioned again.
Hmm, was just checking my email and look what news story was on its homepage…

I didn’t say we stayed dry I said we’ve improved since Katrina. If you were here in August 2005, you would see what I mean.
Dada… Ha! Yah, Twinkie’s English ancestors mighta had something to do with knocking over a lantern or something…Ha! Clever chap.
Yat… it has been my experience that good things often come out of the bad. I was appalled at how things were bungled up in regards to Katrina. I wasn’t there, but it seemed like a much bigger fiasco than it needed to be… with governmental response.
stick… you went and checked the Squid history. If you continued on… Durke, Kai’s traveling band pal, met a girl in Canadia… and has since just decided to let Randie sublet. This mirrors actual events of some friends of mine. Art comes from somewhere.
Okay… let’s keep things cheery, friends. I want our comments section here to be happy. Hugs everyone… hugs.
