Geek Off
I would go to a Geek Off. And I will revisit Geek Off night at Backstreet Comics in a future toon.
Whilst in Portland, there was a show near the hotel called Geekesque…. let your mind wander on that one.

Wow… wish they’d had those when I was younger! My wife and I are both ubergeeks. And in multiple disciplines.
How geeky? Well, tomorrow at 10:00pm, our sons Sam and Ben will be on a panel at Balticon (Balticon.org) called “Children Of Geeks Unite!” I know Bethlynne will be attending, but I can’t make it; I’m on “The Role Of Anthologies” panel at the same time. Thankfully the Dealers Room will be closed by then, or I’d have to have Nate and/or Tim at the our table, selling my books.
Yeah… that’s pretty geeky.
I love the Geeks! Killer book Mouse has in his hands. You RAWK!
Pete… me, too. I was an expert in Star Wars as a kid. Remember that book that kid came out with back in the 80’s… he was a Star Wars trivia master. I was close to that. I let it slide though. I am impressed with your and your kids doing the panels and such. Wow! Geek Celebrity! Have fun!
Jack… it IS killer! and YOU RAWK!
As a funny side note… Yesterday, Baby Blues used “STAT!” as it’s punchline… Today, I used it. It’s funny sometimes how in funny circles, things can line up (hee hee… that’s kinda funny). I dunno how far out The BB people are, but I wrote today’s toons 3 weeks ago.
Huh, that Gulls Rawk book sure did not have any positive effect on him.
Okay, a Geek Off? I recall game nights with friends and accomplices that would occaisonally turn into all-nighters and would feature the likes of Risk, Cosmic Encounter, Dungeon Quest, Trivial Pursuit, Pictionary, Taboo (loved that buzzer), cards (Oh Hell, Spades, Democracy), Axes and Allies, and lots of munchie food. I also recall a couple student Jeopardy competitions. Do those count?
A show called Geekesque makes me think of the word burlesque, not sure how the first would “come off” though. Maybe a mockery of all things political, economic, societal and newsworthy in dance form???
And, gotta say that a Geek Off does make me think of those all-night hackathons they have at Facebook, were the staff are pressed to create usable applications outside of their normal programming duties overnight. Apparently after a certain amount of time has passed, everyone presents their application and the winner is crowned. On the eve of Facebook’s stock launch they did their 31st hackathon all-nighter.
stick… wha? Mouse is simply not himself… Gulls Rawk is a wonderful compilation of Gulls comics… and I am sure that if Mouse was feeling better, he would have taken it home! (and you can, too… and so can anyone! Gullscomic.com).
Geek Off is trivia based in geeky things… Sci-Fi, the world of comics, etc… and here’s the sorta official term for you to look at.
brig… I did check out the Gulls Rawk book at your cartoonery FF, and it was cute and funny. Mouse must be in pretty much of a funk to not be swayed by it. Wow, look at that, Keith has his own comic, Squidman, on the shelf. I also read that he might be at your Saturday mini-comics and coffee gathering. You oughta have him do up a mini-squidman comic for fun. Alas, I shall be far away, and do not have any of my existing fan art drawings with me to serve as a template for creating a new one on Sat.
Woohoo! Nice to see some love for Sandman. It’s my favorite graphic novel series.
stick… SquidMan just screams comics book title… I could help but toss that in there. I think Squidman should have fun with the mini comics idea… but his would probably deal with cats or guitar players… or cats playing guitars. Your stick figures would do well in a mini comic and it is a shame your’e not in town.
Aeon… Welcome! Yes, The Sandman gets nods. When I think Geek Comic books, Sandman came to mind first before The Watchmen, which I don’t really like and so, therefore, I didn’t use.
Denny… your comment posted on the Grimm Post instead of the cartoon comments here… can you repost? I’m not clever enough to move the darn thing.
I went to the first showing of Geeklesque here in Portland; it was a lot of fun! My favorite was the Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach skit, but maybe I just like girls wearing handlebar mustaches and not much more. (Okay, they were decently dressed in g-strings and pasties too.) Watch the video on YouTube if you want, search for Geeklesque. (Oh, the things that woman did with that 20-sided die! Mercy me!)
Oh my! Uncle Bad! That was… well, you said it… Mercy Me!
The soundtrack to Super Mario Bros. brings back such fond memories of my brother and sister fighting over whose turn it was to play the Nintendo.
I’m not sure if it shows up in the video, but when Princess Peach bounces up and down to the sound effect from the game where Mario jumps up and hits the bottom of a block multiple times for multiple gold coins? (Ba-ding ba-ding ba-ding) Well while she was bouncing onstage, gold coins were raining from her brassiere. Chocolate gold coins, one of which rolled right to my feet. Video game themed candy delivered via lingerie … I was in geekish heaven.
A burlesque show based on video games, and the classics, at that? OK, you win, I’m checking air fares to Portland now.
Also a big fan of Kovalic’s work! I have a pin-up he did of Sa-Bom JIm hanging on the wall of my office. I’ve met him a few times…really nice guy!
