Gauguin Read
I wanted to do a Ghost of Gauguin toon… but I wanted to set it up with a little background.
As is shown in some prior toons, Randie doesn’t really like to read. She’s all about the pictures. So I wanted to make sure that was in there. The funny thing about THIS toon is… that I’m like Randie; I’m not a big reader… but in order to understand Gauguin enough to be able to “ghost him,” I had to read up on him. Funny, eh?
We’ll see the ghost of Gauguin again… much to Randie’s dismay.
Wow, Gauguin started out as a stockbroker? Him and Martha Stewart too. Obviously the guy learned the value of commodities and how to package what folks of his time wanted. Makes me wonder whether Gauguin’s paintings more successful because of his use of color, or because of his fascination with zee nekked island girls? A google image search found oh so many paintings that were not so much passionate as commercial.
Randall… your paintings… zey lack zee marketability. Thomas Kincaid, anyone?
The amount of text in those kinds of books annoys me, too. Don’t me wrong, I love to read, but you pick up art books to see the artists work, right? By all means, include some stuff about the artist’s life (especially if it’s actually pertinent to a particular piece), but a lot of art books seem to include tiny pictures of the art almost as an afterthought.
My father has a lot of art books from his college days as an art major. I’ve read most of them, and I find that they are better than what is available today.
“I em zee ghost uff Gauguin Past…”
stick,
Gauguin was not particularly marketable in his lifetime.
Beetles… OK, there went that theory went up in flames. Funny in that accounts have van Gogh’s brother Theo being a successful art dealer. He must have brokered the works of someone other that brother Vinnie and island-lovin’ adventurer Paulie. who apparently were not so well received. Gauguin’s works are definitely primative (good thing?) and do have lotsa color going for them. Could make for some good adult-oriented tiki lounge decorating.
Beetles… You’re right… Gauguin had trouble selling his Tahitian paintings… they were often misunderstood and confused people. He died before he could see any real acceptance and interest in his later works.
stick… It is interesting to note that Gauguin was an art scoundrel… he left his wife and 5 kids to go “paint with the savages” and he often bragged about his own talent. His “adult bedroom activities” were quite, ahem… well, you go look that part up. He died of syphilis.
Mike D… hee hee… that made me chuckle… um… you’re kidding, right?
Dave & Squid… It annoys me when the powers that be write a book on art and show few to NO pictures! Gah! or… or… they’re in black and white! Wha? Art involves imagery and COLOR! Gah! Sprinkle the pics in and amongst the text (if ya hafta write gobs of text… and I’m okay with that, gimmie lots of color photographs!) There, I feel better.
stick,
As a moderately successful dealer, Theo was able to support and promote artists he personally favored.
