Freelancer
I did strictly freelance art for a time… it’s a scary thing not knowing EXACTLY where your dough is gonna come from. You throw a lot of trust out there.

I’ve been doing freelance computer stuff for a couple years now… it can be hard sometimes. I’ve finally settled into one job that’s Thursdays, but it was a long trip getting here, and I’m still freelancing to bring more income in.
Ouch, that can not be easy.
Hmm. Nice nautical artwork on the wooden plank wall. The place must be a fishin’ chips joint. Ha. The way Randie starts off, Ryan’s probably thinking that she’s going to pick up the tab. Nope, she clears that misconception up in panel three.
Ah, commissions, freelancing, entrepreneurship…
Creativity or Conformity. Which is the greater evil and which is the greater good? Is it worse to be branded a renegade hobbyist or a mindless drone? Do you get paid better over the long run by producing pearls of you own inspired insight or by diligently performing volumes of someone else’s required gruntwork?
I suppose it depends on how much of a following you have.
Hillary Clinton is leaving her position of Secretary of State and has said she will take up public speaking. Really? Then it came out that over the past 10 years her hubby Bill Clinton has made $89 million from public speaking. Even more amazing was the revelation that Ronald Reagan was once paid $12 million for a single speech in Japan. Wow, and here I thought that Sarah Palin did good getting $75 thou. for a university fundraising appearance/talk.
Maybe it really depends on how good of an agent you have.
I hate free lance. It seeps into your free time and is forever looming over you. But the payday is always good….mostly.
I’ve been freelancing for about six years now, and the timing of work is never steady. It’s either a ton of clients all at once or a long stretch of nothing. It would be enough to drive you crazy, but let’s face it, all freelance artists must be crazy folks to begin with!
Feast or famine. Ain’t that always the way….
I did strictly freelance at a few different times… It was a bit nerve-racking… I usually dug into my savings quite a bit…. This was before the comic strip. I like steady income… It’s a wacky business… Hats off to those who can make it work.
If somebody wants to pay me for showing up at a podium and gabbing on about cartoons… I wouldn’t turn it down. The Clintons have a bit more of a pull… But I got more of a draw… Wah-wah.
ha ha.
Randie’s preaching to the choir today- I’ve been a freelancer for a few years now. Sometimes I’ve had to deal with long financial “drought,” but when it rains, it pours! It’s all about thinking way outside of the box (If you’re a freelancer, then you’re already outside of most boxes), and managing your money. While you’re working hard to get the most out of the work that you get, you’re looking forward to a little personal downtime, and when you’re low on work, you’re running around like a lunatic to find more work! I’ve just come out of one of those slumps about two weeks ago, so it’s on the upturn once again!
I can’t help but to comment on yesterday’s strip too- I used to work a nearby retail job that took me 5 or so minutes to get to. One rare Florida morning, the windshield was frozen over, I couldn’t see anything through it and there wasn’t enough time to figure some inventive way to de-ice the car, so I rode with my head sticking out the window! I got a nice, refreshing blast of winter air and a free, poofy “mad scientist” hairdo on the way to work. Now that I’m a 100% freelancer, I’m totally thankful that I don’t have to brave the elements for my money, as I write about howler monkeys and Wampas from the comfort of home. 😉
