Farside Trib
Yes, it is the birthday of Gary Larson… Mr. Far Side. It was a ground breaking comic strip. It surfaced in that magical time in comics, the 80’s, where you had Bloom County, Calvin & Hobbes, and The Far Side all running together… (and Garfield was actually funny then!)
Ooo… and Helen of the Internet, and Doonesbury.
All four of the comics you mentioned were huge influences on me as a child cartoonist (yep, even Garfield). Comic strips are still at the core of my love of drawing, and it was a great time to be reading the funnies.
ah, the far side. hilariously twisted, mr. larson knew how to spin a seemingly innocent scene into a study in mayhem…
these days that realm is visited by strips like “rhymes with orange” and “tundra”
Ooo, ouch on that Garfield jab.
Uh, doesn’t Max still live in apt. numb. three? Haven’t seen hide nor hair of him for a while now, and he sure did have a buncha hair on that hide.
Yes, loved all four of those strips. At least Garfield is around. Nice tribute, not sure what to make of Randie’s hairdo.
I wouldn’t be too concerned unless the folks in #3 turned out to be GL’s cows. Mmmooooooooooooooooo!
I agree with the Garfield assessment. It was hilarious in the 80s. Not so much now.
And shouldn’t Randie have “cat’s eye” glasses and beehive hair?
stick… Garfield has changed over the years. Davis doesn’t even draw it anymore. Sad. And Max lives (?) in number 1.
Yat… yes… but I still wanted it to look like Randie. And we don’t know who lives in apartment 3… it very well could be cows.
Firedome… and those are good toons.
Dada… yup!
Pete… Helen… not familiar… Doonesbury… true dat.
Aw, Garfield’s still funny; he’s still my favorite who appears in my local paper. (I wish Squid Row did!) Garfield’s just not AS funny.
I knew Davis didn’t draw it anymore; it was kinda obvious. Was it because he basically sold out? 🙁
Chase… Yah… I still read Garfield… but it is not the same. In the 80’s, he was sassy and fun to read. what is your local paper? where?
I would say, Mr. Jason Voorhees lives in Apt. 3.
Squid… shudder!
Ah, the memories. Those were some good strips back then.
Agreed on Garfield. It used to be a wonderful strip, but part of the problem is Davis’ heart wasn’t totally in it, he admitted himself in an interview that it was all about the money, if he couldn’t earn a boatload of money then he wouldn’t be doing the strip. Now all that’s left really is the merchandising so it doesn’t surprise me a whit that he cashed out and left. Sad, really.
I remember back in the 80’s seeing the very first of the Garfield books on sale. That was actually how I first discovered it, the local paper in S.F. wasn’t carrying it yet. Loved it for years, own a few of the books. But the humor lost its edge several years ago, and the material started being even more repetitive than ever, a sure sign the well was going dry.
Farewell, oh Fat Cat, we knew you well, heh.
But The Far Side was always a riot, Mr. Larson has etched a place in history methinks. Any true time capsule wouldn’t be complete without one of his compilations in it, eh? 😀 And you did a bang-up job with the homage to his creation, Brig, I think he’d be proud.
Garfield seems to be a good gateway comic. It’s draws you to the comic page because it’s very obvious, you get what it’s about quickly and doesn’t take a lot of work to read. Then you move on to other strips.
Oh, Bridg…..you almost had me literally dropping on the floor laughing at this one! Well played, Ma’am! Well played!
