I got a pick-me-up tonight as well. After my visit to the Cartoonery, I bought one of Brig’s framed strips(Paintwater Tea).
One of the other webcomics I enjoy is Paul Taylor’s Wapsi Square. At the end of June, I asked Paul to do a commission for me. It is now completed and on display at his website: http://wapsisquare.com/comic/a-game-of-chess/
After I make the final payment and receive it in the mail, it will be framed and hang on the wall next to “Paintwater Tea”.
I love the second wind, sometimes more than I love the first wind. And if you do something enjoyable and/or constructive with that second wind, then the second exhaustion feel pretty nice, too!
BeetlesBane,
I asked Paul to show a game in progress with a few pieces on each side taken from the board.
I did not want to limit Paul’s input into how the pieces are positioned. As far as I know, it is not meant to represent a famous match or the like. I’ve met Paul at the local comic cons and I had no doubt that he would know how the game is played. He was very enthusiastic about this commission and the results are beyond my expectations.
Pete… It’s monday; I’m finding it hard to muster up a “first” wind!
Jack… tanks…
Joe… That’s a great piece of tooning artwork! That will look lovely on yer wall!
Squid Minion #1 was in Portland this past weekend and there was a chess tournament at the hotel he was staying at. Harold was jealous… he tells me he’s interested in playing some chess for competition. (I’m sure it takes him forever to make a move, though). And I’m jealous, because said minion went to Voodoo Donuts AND Powell’s Books… and no, I didn’t get a t-shirt, salt-n-pepper shaker, or snow-globe.
Rye’s life could be worse. Here’s a 10 second video of a Colorado Rockies (baseball) coach getting hit by a stray ball (his nose is broken) in the background of an ESPN commentary.
Dada… While not a beer drinker, myself (but I know those who are)… I think you’re right.
Stick: For awhile, I was still posting the black and whites online while doing color in the paper. Finally, it occurred to me… DUH… Although, it’d probably sell more books if online was in B/W, paper is in newsprint, and the book is in stunning CMYK glory…
As far as the baseball clip, it concerns me that the other players are just casually walking towards him as if being hit in the face with a baseball was no big deal.

“Half mast eye lids” That’s just great dialogue.
Joe,
Who’s responsible for the game position show, you or Paul. If you, can you give any background?

Like spinach for Popeye. I think a pint could raise any poor creative soul from the near dead!
First wind…second wind…it seems to be more about doing something fun and rewarding versus undesired and punishing.
Pete… You’re so right. Exhaustion can be either good or bad.
brig… Good luck with yer kite flying. Get it? Wind… Kite… smile.
In flipping open my squid book I came across this cartoon, only in colorized form…

Seems karma is looking to bite Rye in the butt. Tonight he plays, tomorrow he pays.
I’ll laugh out loud if the hotdog-on-a-stick girl (in costume) shows up to be waited upon.
