Yes, there is a Toronto, Kansas…. to be from there… well “small town” says nothing.
And… you are probably wondering about Tim… and what the thought behind that was… I will let the story continue a bit.
And in Monterey… there used to be a night clubby place called the Hippodrome… which I thought was an odd name for a place… turns out it’s Greek… and it’s where they ran horse and chariot races… where the hippos come in, I haven’t a clue.
“Hippopotamus” means “River Horse”
Hippo id
Hippo is Greek for horse. hippopotamus = waterhorse
Toronto, Kansas like many small towns in New Mexico (one building) may exist as a post office site for the local farms.
You may be right, BB. Wikipedia sez Toronto, Kansas is 0.36 square miles with a population of ~ 280.
I grew up in Pittston, Ontario. We had two intersections! 😀
Admittedly, it was on a campground, so the population was somewhat higher than it could of been, and pretty varied, and awesome for a kid, but it was still tiny.
hippo-
a combining form appearing in loanwords from Greek, where it meant “horse” ( hippodrome )
I was once in a town in Kansas that literally rolled up its sidewalks at night – each store had a length of boards strung together on wire that they would roll up at the end of the day so that the big grain trucks could roll through at night, without destroying the ‘walks’.
Huron was the biggest town nearby, but danged if I can remember the name of the town – this was back around 1974 or so.
The Auld Grump
Hippo is Greek for Horse, but I think that you were just razzing us, eh?
Hippopotamus means River Horse.
The Auld Grump
Also, they called it the Hipposhere. I think you may mean Hippo-sphere.
Anything else is shere madness.
There’s a Toronto in Ohio too. It’s a river town. No river horses there, I’m afraid….
