Enter Clive
Welcome to London, Rye Bread…
I love mini coopers, ya’ll. I had the opportunity to drive one whilst in San Diego. My cousin Theresa has a 2005. They are soooo smooth… and drive soooo well. Mmmmmm. If I were richie rich, I’d have me a Mini AND a Vespa. Oooo, how extravagant of me.
brig… That, oh soooo smooth 2005 Mini Cooper you drove is really a BMW.
BMW has been building Mini’s since 2001, and they bear very little similarity to the old 60’s and 70’s era, British Austin Cooper Minis that Clive drives.
BMW also makes Rolls Royces, which, as I understand, are even more plush.
Hmm, the Clive and Rye match up, sounds like that of Oscar and Felix in the Odd Couple.
stick’s right.
When I was in England(’85-86). I drove a 1985 Mini. 850cc, 4 cyl., front wheel drive and a radio(AM only).
Brig,
Don’t forget! Left-hand drive!
Glimpsing Clive’s style and the collection of stuff “expanding” from the car… are we seeing the beginning of a ‘Notting Hill’ roommate situation? Rye being the Huge Grant character of course! Nothing like learning how to be flexible and adapt… “Rye, you’re not on the ‘Row’ anymore.” … How long is this adventure?
Yes, I am aware that the mini is actually BMW (which is why it’s so smooth). STILL… It’s adorable and handles like a charm. And yes… you are right to invoke the Odd Couple. I loved Felix… and wanted to throw things at Oscar.
Joe… uh huh… they do drive on the wrong side… I didn’t forget…. that’s why Ryan is gettin’ in on the passenger side… or trying to anyways.
Dragon… I shan’t devulge how long this chapter shall go on. But when I was searching for places in London… that our hero could live, I found many “Rows”… Savile Row, Paternoster Row, there’s even a Raven Row… But I felt like it would be too weird to go with that…. and yet, I kinda like the idea (it grows on a person)…
Oooh… so much to say!
– Best little car I drove was my friend’s MG, back in 1979. He’d gotten it for his high school graduation (as opposed to what I got: nothing), and it was a sweet sportster. Everything from the gear shift to the doors was perfect.
– Speaking of perfect, the owner of the company I work for is impressing some guests right now, so he has his Rolls Royce parked out front. Talk about drop dead beautiful!
– I researched a Row for a novel once. I was able to find a painting of a row of houses on Siddons Lane. Into one of them I put my protagonists for a chapter. If any fan were to try to find the street and house, they would discover I have it directly behind the home of 221B Baker Street; the home of another fictional – but far more famous – character: Sherlock Holmes.
– Oh… and good comic. The potential of what’s to come is nearly endless.
Funny that… Rolls coming right into the conversation… and boom… there it is. And MGs are right nifty-looking… and just my size (as is the Cooper)…
Glad you dig the storyline. I am soooo having fun with it!
Hmmmm. Ryan and Emily aren’;t even married and already Ryan is having in-law trouble.
Right out of the service in 1970, I bought a ’64 (? Not sure now) MGB and drove the wheels off it. Love-hate relationship, great driving, often breaking. Changed the starter drive a dozen times in two years. Never been tempted to get a mini, though the highly modified ones in “The Italian Job” looked awesome.
Nelson had an MG… British racing green… so the story goes… it was more of a “project” than an actual vehicle that ran.
