It does seem the time is quickly coming when Emily is going to realize she let Ryan slip away and will be saddened by it. But will it be enough to cause her to do something about it? I have a hunch the answer is going to be… no.
Emily is a wonderful person, but lives her life and views her world in a way much different than Ryan. Emily sees the world as an expanse to view and interact with, but not really be a part of. Ryan is much more the kind of person who sees the world as a whole, but will cozy up to one part of it to get to know it personally.
Whaaaa? Dada, I’m with you. I totally saw it as a parting of the ways on Ryan’s part.
If Rye did call it quits and Emily is not ready to let go, things may get mighty interesting.
She may not be open to a “disconnection”…ya know…”Hell hath no fury as a woman scorned.”
Hmm, what’s a very wealthy scorned woman, doing doctoral research on serial murderer modus operandi, and bent on potential heartbreak revenge to do?
Maybe Randie should be careful in starting up the Vespid for a while.
brig… Great job if you’re doing a very timely tie-in with this weekend’s Steinbeck Festival, themed, “Friends and Foes,” in your city of Salinas.
I wonder if…it’s more one of those moments when we realize we don’t really want someone who is exactly like us. Ryan is a bit out of place here becaue he is the writer/observer type. He thought he was in love cause he found someone just like him. Yet so often what we think we want is not actually what we want.
Stick… breaking up, in most cases, isn’t a smooth transition. There is much more to come. The beginning of the end? I won’t tell. And thanks… the Steinbeck Fest has some interesting things going on. I may get in on the graphic novel art show (Of Mice & Men).
Joy… (Welcome!) Yes, indeed. He found a someone who has lots in common. Em writes, she waitressed, she loves to read…. and yet, who is his constant companion and muse? The complete opposite.
But I thought that Emily’s return to England was only temporary… I know it’s exceptionally hard to maintain a long-distance relationship, but it is do-able…
Oh but relationships can be confusing. Adages include…opposites attract…likes stay together.
It’s interesting that Rye still calls Em, “Sweetheart.”
Just being nice, I had thought earlier, now I don’t know.
Looking forward to see where this story arc leads…yes, nice symbolism with the phone juggling and eventual dropping…and possibly the reddish (anger?) hue of the last balloon.
I looked up that graphic novel exhibition. The scripting in the artwork was done in French which hopefully will have translations. Sad that the artist will be on site (artist reception) only on FF from 6 to 8. Still may be fun to see later. Happy to be in town this weekend.
Relationships need nourishment from both sides. It is apparent that Emily wasn’t putting enough into the relationship. But she and Ryan didn’t call anything off. Ryan just couldn’t stay in London. The fact that school is, indeed, temporary would be a reason to stay in the relationship. I can’t say that Ryan isn’t disappointed with where things are… who wouldn’t be? But I don’t think that he, or she, is angry… just saddened…. and are trying the long distance relationship. As they work things out… we’ll see it being worked out.
Emily knew that Ryan was running low on dosh and lost his job when he left the USA. Why didn’t she at least give him a pittance to try and keep him around? If he was there on a tourist visa, it’s only good for so long anyway.
For some, school is permanent as they continue on into teaching.
Since Rye was doing freelance, seems that he’d still have his income sources while in London, he just needed productivity.

Well said, Pete! Some people are wanderers, observers; others are snugglers…
Didn’t they break up? I should probably go back and reread it again.
Pete… Wow… that’s quite an observation. Jude, you’ve condensed it further even.
… and sometimes you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s dating someone else. (You might think that’s a hint… bu…t … I dunno… might could be).
Dada…. not in so many words. It was merely discussed in a flashback that Ryan needed to go home.
