There’s nothing wrong with a good pair of headphones. Even though a good pair can cost quite a lot of money. My cat does like to chew on the wires though.
I’ve always figured headphones were what Randie is holding – something with a heavy band over the head, and full-ear if not over-the-ear speaker sets. Earphones are the types that hook over the ear or just wedge inside of it, like earbuds.
So I guess you could say it comes down to what’s primarily holding the rig – the ear itself, or your whole head?
As much as I love music, I hate using either earphones or headphones when people are around. I know you can hear through the good ones these days, but I’m still old school and think it is rude to be “plugged in” when there are other around. When I’m by myself or biking or walking alone, I have no problem, but if there’s a chance someone will speak to me, they stay off.
@Pete:
Agreed, which is why I prefer noise-cancelling over-the-ear headphones. I don’t care if it makes me look like a hipster, it means I can keep the volume low but still enjoy the music. If people want my attention they need only wave along my sightline, I will pause the tunes and pull my headphones back.
There’s also some good in-the-ear style earbuds for this too. As long as you don’t mind paying about as much as oyu would for the good headphones, that is. But they’re out there, with good sound quality and noise-cancelling features.

I’d go with ‘headphones.’
Whaaat?? I can’t hear you, I got earphones on!
When did spill become the Pun-isher?
Squid guy… I was just at Costco and they had all kinds of head phones of a noise cancelling nature.
Grey… You are right, sir!
Jack… And so are you!
Yat… You and everybody else.
Dada… This very morning… She just woke up and…
No earphones could block out the rimshot on that one.
