Disappointment
The last quote there by Bierce was one I had to think on for a while. It is cynical. Switch “disappointment” and “opportunity” around and it makes sense.

a corollary to bierce’s observation might be “he who expects nothing can never be disappointed”. it’s always been my philosophy…
Ryan should really know better than to quote “Bitter” Bierce when trying to cheer someone up.
I’m afraid the only thing that’ll cheer Randie up is a surge in sales.
Beetle: That’s the first time I’ve seen an Ambrose Bierce quote that wasn’t in the daily Cryptoquote.
Better a known evil than an unknown one?
It’s a philosophical outlook that has many seeking comfort in disappointment so as not to have to deal with success if it happens.
To Ryan, disappointment may be a friend, but Randie’s a resister.
Bitter or no, Bierce is awesome.
Bane: I think Ryan was actually, but awkwardly, trying to cheer her up… but the humor backfired. That last quote is kinda funny, in an ironic cheerless sort of way.
Firedome… Hope for the best, expect the worst, and be happy with what you get. Wisdom from a friend.
Yat… agreed… if she found that all those zines were picked up, that would just make things much better! Someone should tell Randie that Peanuts was only in 7 papers when it premiered! SEVEN… he ended up with somewheres near 2500. That’d cheer her up, non?
stick… there is that… what to do with success… I wouldn’t mind fumbling around with it.
UWG…. bitter you say? bah.
Heh, I love quotes from Bierce, Twain, or Wilde – sure cures for optimism. :^P
The Auld Grump, Dorothy Parker is good too….
