I love the controversy over Jackson Pollock’s “drip” paintings back in the 50’s… “is THIS art?” Abstract Expressionism really challenged the notion of “what is art?” It can be paint drizzled from a ladder onto a canvas… or paint flung from a paint stick onto a wall.
Randie appreciates Street Art… which many deem not-art. She is also schooled in “fine art”… so there is this “bridge” (ha ha) where the two meet (so is it really a bridge too far?)
Ruby… do you like Pollock? Street art?
Brig,
I can get where Randie is trying to push beyond the limitations of “art” to make people think about the message and not that it is just a pretty picture. Music has its own variations that attract/repel different people just like different schools of art. Is an outdoor wall mural any less “art” than a Renaissance masterpiece? Very few people would deface a painting on canvas, but on a brick wall? Maybe there should be a festival for the “street” artists.
Do blank walls or an empty canvas call to you to as if the were mutes waiting for their voices to be heard in the form of a painting? Some whispering, some screaming, some pleading, some demanding? When I write, I try to give my characters voices and personalities. That way, I can decide if the dialogue matches what the character should say.
In the UK, there’s a stretch of walls along the Queen’s Walk that are loaded with street art… I don’t know the story behind it… but it is absolutely fascinating. The Tate had an exhibit on Street Art whilst I was there in 2008. Banksy is one of those really interesting street artists from the UK… his art is rather thought provoking. Not all street art is as rich.
I don’t know that blank canvases call to me. Sometimes the size or shape of a canvas inspires something… but I don’t hear any voices. If I did… I might become alarmed.
Don’t worry about me. We are not insane!
What? Who wrote that? C’mon, fess up! Who was that? Sorry Brig. Its under control. It’s under control. It’s under… Use the Force Luke!
Whoops! Sometimes I have to do that to get through Writer’s Block. Random thoughts get strung together and heavily edited before anyone else sees them. Forums like this allow me to post some of my least coherent ideas and get feedback. Much like when your strip is posted and visitors comment on it.
I don’t really hear voices, but I try to imagine some person or an actor whos voice I do know is saying the line. They may have an accent that I am trying to get accross in the dialogue. It doesn’t always work because the person reading it may use their own inner voice. Its like having someone tell you a story instead of simply scanning a page with your eyes. If you were to play an audio version while reading the book, you might get the same effect.
That’s enough for today. I have to get to work. Bye.
Sorry, no sale. Street art is kitsch, graffiti ,or vandalism. Randi isn’t saying she produces edgy, transgressive art. She’s saying “I’m a twit with no taste.” Ryan is right.
There is so much difference of opinion on the value of street art. I feel that there is very good street art, and then there is tagging which is of little value. But Randie is pointing out that Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Oh my gawd! A bridge to far Randie! I think she vandalized her own painting!
Pop modernism ruining good and classic. Kinda like with the music these days.
I like it.

Street art is totally awesome. I’d love to see more of it. And I rather like Randie’s painting :).
Also, Happy Belated Birthday to Randie! I slept all day yesterday and missed it.

Show me an abstract expressionist painting and I’ll show you a lazy artist.
you guys don’t like those abstract expressionists, does ya’s?
