Concept
Harold would approve.
The origin of the Mai Tai (“the greatest tiki drink of all” as quoted in Tiki of Hawai’i…) is somewhat controversial. In the very beginnings of Tiki culture, Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic’s both claim that they concocted the Mai Tai (Many websites differ) I dunno… I think a Zombie might give the Mai Tai a run for it’s money… I like the pineapple juice, myself.
Hmm, how to best get a pineapple-alcohol fix on?
Did me some recipe huntin.’
Zombie: light rum, dark rum, 151 rum, apriot brandy, pineapple juice, orange juice, lime juice, sugar, fruit slice, sprig of mint and a cherry on top.
(Original 1939 version from Don the Beachcombers of Hollywood has no pineapple juice.)
Whew. Alcohol and sugar overload. Pineapple juice is hit or miss, and not traditional. Served on the rocks (ice cubes).
Mai Tai: light rum, dark rum, orgeat syrup (or creme de almond), triple sec, pineapple juice (many recipes substitute orange juice), lime juice & grenadine (or sweet & sour mix), maybe a pineapple wedge for garnish.
(Original 1944 version from Trader Vic’s of Oakland has no pineapple juice.)
(Original 1933 version from Don the Beachcombers of Hollywood has no pineapple juice.)
Yikes. Alcohol and sugar overload, again. Pineapple juice is hit or miss and not tradional. Served on the rocks (ice cubes).
Pina Colada: light rum, cream of coconut, crushed pineapples, crushed ice in a blender, maybe a pineapple wedge and cherry as garnish.
(Original 1954 version from the Caribe Hilton’s Beachcomber Bar (San Juan, Puerto Rico) has both pineapple juice and coconut milk).
Ahhh. Yes. The Pina’s from me. All versions have both pineapple and coconut. There is a on the rocks version, but the frozen-style is frosty, slushy perfection.
OK, a pina is not a traditional tiki drink and the Zombie does have its own specialized glass, BUT it was featured in the Rubert Holmes song, “Escape,” also known as “The Pina Colada Song.” Plus none of these drinks originated in Hawaii, so….
Im getting thoisty!!
Tikis RAWK! Y’know, I’ve never had a Mai Tai, what’s up with that?
Great idea to have a themed drink before painting up pictures in a themed drink bar.
Maybe not so great an idea to get themed drink snockered before meeting the client.
stickfig… Wow… that drink menu offering is rather thorough. I want all you Squiddies to keep this conversation in mind because…
…Harold is up to something… big. He’s been smiling a lot. (You’ve been baited).
Jack… do you like rum? If you don’t like rum, you won’t like Mai Tais.
This past week, Jude and I have been planning stuff for the Aloha First Friday next month. So I had to make a rum run. At Nob Hill I found THE KRAKEN spiced black rum (I’d been eying the cool bottle for months)…. but having a rum aversion since an unfortunate drinking event in my early drinking days, I haven’t been a fan of the stuff). BUT I must say, when you mix rum with stuff… it’s not so bad… Just NOT rum and Coke. (ohhhh, queeesssy).
Squidman…. You likes you some tropical dwinks? Mmmm… it’s wrong to think of Zombies and Mai Tais so early in the morning. I barely finished my coffee… (in my tiki mug, of course).
Thx Brig. Now I am collecting tikki glasses cuz of your toon. )
Jay… Oh, please, oh please share photos of your collections with us. I will do the same! Squid Row Mama’s Flickr site will have a Tiki Mug Collection! So far I only have two… but, yes, oh yes… there will be more! Bwaaaahaaahaa.
ps. glad I could help.
pps… You’ll like what Harold is getting up to. Oh… it’s gonna be fun!
Heyyy Brig!
Love your stip. starting to love it even more!
Tiki is big, big, big nowadays. You’ve got to check out Tiki Central’s web site and hook up to the tiki culture thing. You could be a real star. There are all sorts of artists involved there.
Ryan would want to name the bar Riki Tiki Tavern…or does he not read Kipling?
Welcome Okolehao! I have, indeed, been to Tiki Central… Tiki Central is groovy! and I am most glad you are enjoying the strip! Keep reading… I think you’ll be pleased with where things are going.
Dada… Ha! I’m envisioning a mongoose with a lei and playin’ a ukulele.
brig… Yup, my curiosity tends to go into overdrive late at night. And so…the drink recipe list.
Uh oh. Harold’s up to something?
Last FF, he started out bell-ringing and ended up sporting a knitted brown octopus as a wig.
And he’s now smiling?
Makes me wonder if he’s wired on Kona Koffee or sloshed on Tropical-ized Jamaican Rum.
Dada… Ha. A Rikki Tikki Tiki Tavern will call for some mongoose and cobra drink recipes (nice) and an interesting hybrid mix of India meets Polynesia decorating (whew).
brig… Ha. Nicely pictured. An electric ukulele?
stick… oh, yes… Harold is spinning something up… he seems most happy about it!
and you can plug in a ukulele. Nelson’s new uke does precisely that. Big sound, small instrument.
Nelson donning an electric uke? Nice. Squidman oughta bring his geetar for a jam session.
“Freebird,” anyone?
Aloha! I’ve built a few Tiki Bars in the past. Need any help???
GAH! I would love to build a tiki bar at my house! I have given it some thought… but space is tight and the cats would only use it as a scratching post. Perhaps in the near distant future… at a new house. Are you in the Monterey/Salinas area?
I’ve had a Rum aversion since my early days too. It took me 6 months just to get over the coke aversion…. had to force myself to drink it. Apparently “A Hair of the Dog that Bit You”is the only way to get over such aversions. These days I just stick to whiskeys and keep em straight. I swear it’s all the sugar in mixers that give people the bad hangovers.
