Comic Priority
I spent a long time “mulling” this toon. I had references to the comics mob, and business opportunism… but finally just wound up with a Square Bob joke.

Saw this same kind of behavior one Christmas years ago, when the Cabbage Patch dolls were the hot item. One woman stood at the front of the line at Toys-R-Us with a grocery store shopping cart, and when the doors opened, she rushed to where the Cabbage Patch dolls were stocked. She emptied the shelves into her cart, and then sold them to the slower parents desperate to get the latest hot toy for their kids. So these suckers had to pay TWICE for the dolls! This witch was raking in the dough until the cops arrived and arrested her for theft.
It didn’t used to be like this. Though in most cases this wouldn’t work because the cost of comics is such that you couldn’t get back what you spent in most cases.
I remember when kids bought comics to read and then, maybe, collect. But with the appearance of Howard The Duck’s first comic in 1976, speculation became the beast that wouldn’t die. *sigh*
The old comic books, were worth more because they were rare, too many on the market makes them worthless. Most who speculated on comics went bankrupt.
Marvel had Howard the Duck running for president and printed a treasury edition ( the large sized books probably about 11 x 14 ). I foolishly purchased 10 copies at a buck a piece. I have no idea where they are now.
I used to collect comics when I was a kid, had a decent collection too. I used to collect nearly all of the horror comics that came out as well as a few of the marvel and DC one’s that I liked. Kept them in an old steamer trunk in good if not pristine condition… that is till a couple of kids I was baby sitting managed to find and destroy nearly every comic.
When I tried to get their parents to pay for them they handed me a couple of bucks and said comics aren’t worth that much quit whining and just go buy some more. Did I mention that I had an comic called “The Detective” issue #27 in that collection?
Sorry, that last bit should have read “Detective Comic’s” not the detective. But yeah, I had a copy of the first comic that batman ever appeared in.
My wife and I collected comics for years before we met, for a few years after we met, owned a comic book store for a couple years, then collected for a few more years after that. We’ve about 25,000 comics in our collection, including some pretty valuable ones. (We had – and later sold – an Amazing Fantasy #15, which is origin and first appearance of Spider-man.)
At some point we’ll pull them out of storage and begin selling them. They’ve been a very fun hobby, that’s for sure.
