Cold Outside
I have never had to sleep out of doors against my will. We take for granted, sometimes, that we have a home to go to.

This was actually part of my thought process when deciding to move to Arizona.
It’s not so bad if you can find a decent coat or blanket and find somewhere with a vent close to the ground. The first part isn’t as difficult as you’d think, either. You’d be amazed at what people are willing to throw away.
Please don’t ask me how I know this.
So, guys, how’s about a cuppa Joe for the shivering dude behind the trash can? Oh, you didn’t see him. Most of the time we don’t.
Very true.
Hey, wait, is that the mysterious masked homeless man who always gives her advice?
Dani… San Diego (where I used to live) has a large homeless population. The weather is pretty mild compared to… say Chicago… although, I’m sure they have their homeless as well. Arizona… even more warmish.
Small Dave… I won’t ask… but *hugs* your way.
EofO… and that’s a shame. A warm bev for a cold person wouldn’t cost ya much and it warms the heart on both ends.
On a lighter note… In Kona, Hawaii, there was this fella whom I referred to as “Ben Gunn”… who obviously was homeless… funny… he seemed pretty happy.
Dada… Rudy is a different homeless feller… Cypress City has its share.
My mom’s, neighbor’s cat, which was sort of co-adopted by three houses in a row after it’s owners got evicted from their nearby home and left everything behind, more or less piled up on the driveway (furniture, decorations, lots of stuff in huge piles). They trashed the inside of the house too, but that’s another story. So this awesome blonde cat with bright yellow eyes was sleeping in the vacant (since sold) house’s porch and got co-adopted in it’s searches for food.
Well, one of it’s back legs got some how messed up last night and it came over meowing and stayed the night and is still trying to sleep it off. The main adoptee can’t be reached.
So, anyway, wounded animals try to get away someplace safe (he rarely naps at my mom’s) to recuperate.
Having volunteered at a homeless shelter and soup kitchen for about 13 years, I can tell you that many homeless folks are battling “internal” demons and stepping away from society actually brings them comfort.
btw… Happy (Fun) Friday the 13th, All.
While backpacking along the Mogollon Rim in 1975, we spent a night outside in the snow. I was still using the sleeping bag my parents had given me when I was nine, and it was made for summer. When morning came, the other guys had a half-inch of snow on their bags; mine was soaked clean through. It was the longest, coldest, most miserable night of my life. (Save one, but that was in a nice warm hospital while in a drug induced sleep.)
That’s the closest I’ve come to knowing the cold the homeless endure, and I really don’t want to experience it again.
Good comic, Brig.
See, Rye should wear his hat like that, over the ears.
I was on the homeless end of things for a few months when I was around 18 or 19. It’s not fun, lived out of a car and ate handouts till I could manage to find one of the crappiest jobs on the planet to pay the bills.
As luck would have it the crappy job also came with housing since a friend of mine needed a roommate and was willing to vouch for me to his boss. Looking back now I almost wish he hadn’t, that was pretty much the lowest period of my life. I worked that job for a year, mostly back to back 12 hour shifts for an abusive boss who took it out of our pay if anyone shoplifted anything.
stick… take care of dat kitty. It breaks my heart that some people can be so cold to animals… and people, for that matter.
Pete… it makes you have empathy for those who have to live in those circumstances everyday. And thank you for the compliment.
Jack… I know! I gatta pull hats over my ears, too.
Pasha… I think folks that come from meager beginnings appreciate things more. I bet you don’t hesitate helping others in need. Also, when you have the lows, it makes the highs… stellar!
Glad yer passed those times.
