I used to work late nights at Disneyland…. the closing shift. Counting a till at 1:30 in the morning wasn’t always easy… in fact, I look back and wonder how I did it!

*lol!* I can partially relate to that, Brig! When I worked the midnight at Disneyland, we felt bad for those cast members that stayed late, counting the money. I know we on the graveyard were the shift others preferred not to see. Not because we weren’t liked but because we represented the “it’s after midnight and you’re still here” part of the day. 😉
From our side, we didn’t resent you guys staying late. But the Park was “ours” after midnight – except Fridays and Saturdays in the summer, when it was ours after 1:00am – and we loved that we were the only 500 or so there. Disneyland is a completely different world in the day, but after it closes, it’s an even MORE different world.
Pete, that must have been amazing to see all the Disney-ness at night. Things were not surrounded by people… or crazy and crowded. I imagine it was like a secret life almost.
Never a fun duty (I used to have to do it back in my theme park days). The most mind-bending job is always saved for when you’re the most exhausted.
Six years (almost) at Wally world–counting a till when you’re half asleep and then having to go straighten up an area until some idiotic, sadistic, power mad, assistant manager decides you can go home. And then they cut your hours because you have too much time! Actually, we didn’t count it so much as bag everything up except 50 dollars for they next shift. When our store went 24 hours it was crazy! All the nuts, wierdos, and sad drunks come out at night and wander around Wally because they have nowhere else to go. Really sad at times. Remind me to tell you some stories about working in the fitting room!
I actually fondly recall working graveyard at a coffee shop. Had some regular d&d-ish gamers and a whole host of loopy folks after the bars shut down around 2-ish. That scene was fun. Had less fun at a fancy restaurant when parties just would not catch on to hints that the place should have already closed. I’m sure they caught on, they just refused acknowledging it.
On one occaison, I saw folks cashing out their tills at a Wendy’s. They brought out a scale, set it for whatever type of bill ($1, $5, $10, $20), dropped the bills on the top and got an instant dollar count. They jotted down the readout and dropped the bills in a bag. After, a plastic basket was put on top of the scale, and coin totals were instantly rendered the same way. So fast, so easy, so nice.
Counting the till ought to bring joy…the final task before escape and freedom.
Dada… I’m saying… at the end of the day, I can barely stand let alone do math. Then again, I can barely do math!
Ruth… Oh no! I’m not sure IF I WANT to know about the fitting rooms.
stick… I suspect the folks at Wendy’s had math issues as well. Graveyard shifts would kill me today.
Just pray that it comes out even!
Jack… I was also an asst. manager at Aaron Brothers long way time ago, and as a manager-type, you had to get all the reciepts and stuff to balance and you stayed until you did! Gah… wait, am I twitching?! I’m twitching!
I applied for and was offered the job of assistant manager at Maya Cinemas when it first opened in Oldtown. At the last minute, I realized I was signing over my life, and declined. Talk about dodging a bullet!
Goodness, EofO…. that would’ve been quite life-consuming… BUT you’d see all the movies for free… BUT you’d have movie popcorn around at all times (dangerous) BUT you’d get movie posters galore!
Just let me say one thing about fitting rooms in any store–don’t try clothes on! Just take them back if they don’t fit!! And always, always, always, wash something before you try it at home!
Yer scaring me Ruth…
