Charcoal
This is exactly how I feel about charcoal. I dislike the dust and the mess, but like the affects you get by smudging. I need some sort of artist Haz-mat suit!

Charcoal!! In art school, we had charcoal lesson one every other thursday. We always end up with more charcoal on us than on the paper.
(alos, I’m safe admitting it now, but there was this day when the teacher had to absent herself for half an hour. We may have had a big charcoal fight. Complete with charcoal shrapnel. And charcoal warpaint. Hopefully, our teacher don’t read Squidrow…)
You may be able to get a Tyvek-style suit that professional ceiling painters use….but beware, they make you really HOT. Noooo breathability in those babies…
Kineko… Ooops. Charcoal fights sound very messy, indeed. Let’s hope your instructor isn’t a Squiddie.
Meem… I would soooo wear that. I think that something like that is entirely necessary for me!
I never had any problems with it…on the other hand, I’m one of those artists that ALWAYS wears black, so there you go.
Try spraying fixative on the sticks to contain the dust. Makes for much neater work.
Why am I now picturing Spill just picking Randie up and using her on the wall/paper/what-have-you? [hee hee]
Dada… that would explain the “pigpen” cloud appearing around you…. it’s charcoal!
Glen… Good charcoal tip!
Kestralyn… ha! Reminds me of The Muppet Christmas Carol where Gonzo picks up Rizzo the Rat and uses him to wipe off the window. Hee hee.
Lesson learned?
Dumpster coal diving + Door slammed in face = Black lung.
On visiting the city art center in Brig’s nearby town of Pacific Grove I was impressed by an ingenious dust-sucking device used by a lady making large-scale pastel pictures. She had a long rectangular box attached to the bottom of her easel with a pair of hoses (one on each end) going from it to a shop vac. It had a mesh top to catch dropped pastels, and looked something like this…

…only much wider and less deep.
Tyvek coveralls http://www.lowes.com/pd_126376-968-14185/6FF_?PL=1&productId=1008379 Still nothing for the hands and shoes but hey they’re washable, right?
Ugh, conte crayon, charcoal, BLECH! Give me my pen! It’s final and perfect…as long as you’ve got a pocket protector.
