Cab Ride
I’m sure at some point during this ride, there was some question as to why they didn’t call 911 (?) … or do you suppose there was a reason for that…?

seeing that gps on the cabbie’s dash makes me think of london cabbies and the time and effort they have to put into learning ‘the knowledge’ (of the london streets). i wonder what they think of the gps?.
I was wondering about the 911 thing on Monday. Can’t afford an ambulance, maybe?
*heh* I learned on another web comic to never speculate too much on what’s about to happen. I hit it on the head and got the artist a little mad at me.
So my prediction is: We’ll see more on Friday. 😉
Labor usually lasts hours… and hours… and hours. Unless you’re perilously close to having a baby in the next half hour, 911 usually recommends you have someone drive you to the hospital so you can enjoy your nice, 8-12 hours of contractions and someone who is currently bleeding out can use the ambulance instead.
A rich ghost got them!!!
I’ve been told it’s as fast and more comforting to the mother to be with people she knows on the trip to the hospital for any pregnancy issues and labour, unless there’s something wrong. And ambulances have a ridiculously harsh effect on city traffic, while cabs and personal vehicles don’t. Panic, however, makes everything awful.
anatman… yah… London Cabbies go through rigorous training… but gps would lesson that necessity I would think. BUT, now London has lots of rules about public transit and times when certain roads are only accessible by cabs and busses … it’s all that crazy pollution and traffic.
Jim… I’m sure that had something to do with it… however, Trev’s and Carrie’s responses are good.
Pete… One shouldn’t hit anybody on the head. OH… you mean the story not that artist! Hee hee.
Carrie… there ya go! You seem schooled in this. A family member had a 36 hour delivery… and was MOST uncomfortable… so I am told. That’s hours and hours, yah?
Trev… I had a friend who shared with me some of her bills regarding an ambulance ride… And this was years ago… I was appalled. I couldn’t imagine what it would be today, but with skyrocketing healthcare and such… I’d be okay with a car ride… providing there wasn’t any *gulp* blood. I like the car’s interior.
There’s also the little aspect that if they knew it would be easy to hail a cab, they would expect it to be faster.
Once, while on a doctor’s examining table, my blood pressure dropped from 120 to 50. She had me taken to the hospital in an ambulance … 100 feet away. I joked with the EMT that if my blood pressure tanked again in route he should just tell me what this ride was costing me; that should raise my blood pressure again. He didn’t smile.
Emergency Medical Technicians seem curiously ill humored about this subject. But honestly, I got transported in a vehicle specifically designed to keep me alive in case my body tried to die in any number of ways. I figure that rightfully raises the cost of the ride.
911? The ambulance may or may not take the husband. They definitely wouldn’t take Randie.
You can’t be certain of the hours and hours of labor, a friend of mine wound up helping to deliver a baby in her bathroom. The woman went in to use the facilities and then started yelling about call the ambulance my water broke, less then 20 minutes later the baby was born. The ambulance got there just in time to haul mother and child in to make sure they were alright.
Maybe b.b. is more than 6 months pregnant? At any rate you can have false labour anytime after 30 weeks, so more or less after 7 months.
A cab ride is 6-8 dollars. An ambulance costs over $1000,00 These are poor people, remember?
I was rescued by a cab when I was in NY last month. It was 3am and I got done with an install at MSG and I had to get back to Brooklyn. Well, usual route was closed for repairs so I took a different train that led me to a super seedy quiet area under the Brooklyn Bridge. I wasn’t about to hoof it 1 mile back to my hotel, but there was no one around, no cabs, nothing! I waslked a block and had headlights at my back, uh oh, *honk*, I turn, yay, a cab!
Mary… Cabbies, in my experience, drive all crazy! Fast and crazy!
Uncle Bad… great story… Docs in cahoots with the insurance company would be MY guess… but that’s just me. We are glad you are still with us!
qka… Yah… it’s good that they all be together… Randie would have a long way to bike to get to the hospital! SHe may need medical help after that bike ride!
Gramy… Yah… that’s crazy… we had a Walmart employee give birth in the Walmart bathroom here in Salinas not long ago. Made all the news… the funny thing is… (and there is a God), there just happened to be a NURSE there in the bathroom! Just happened to be? Nope… Angels at work.
Additional note…. my sister, NICU nurse, helped care for baby at her work. Weird, eh?
Ep… She is not.
Lee A… TRUE! Wow… $1000 now. I cannot imagine. I blame the insurance companies… but don’t you get me started!!!!!
Jack… Yay! Yay! You are safe! Sounds like a scary SCARY story that ended well. Did you know that Blondie (of Deborah Harry fame) took a ride in NYC from Ted Bundy (of serial killer fame) and lived… you can read story here:

They couldn’t find “11” on their phone?
sorry
