Books
Okay… I put my favorite Portland things in this comic… (not ALL of them). Ryan also coulda lured her out with the promise of going to one of the many COOL comic book stores… or ART stores (I visited Columbia Art Supplies on Burnside on my last visit)… for the record, I was lured out of said art store with the promise of Voodoo Donuts. AIL.
That donut sounds like it would be worth the price of the airfare … Portland, you say?
Watch out for the line Randie! It’ll make you want to get into voodoo. Or, you could go to the Voodoo on Sandy. Yum!
In addition to the near-ENDLESS number of books they have at Powell’s, we loved that the store is about six buildings that have had interior walls taken down to open up the place. Since the buildings weren’t built at the same time, nor by the same construction companies, and were meant for different purposes, that means going from building to building often means a couple stairs up here, a couple stairs down there.
Powell’s is a dreamy blend of quality and quirkiness. 🙂
Well sure she doesn’t want to leave, she can sit around and look at picture books all day without having to buy them. You’d think the place would have a cover (door) charge (refundable with purchase) to stay in business. A public library it isn’t. Plus even the libraries out here have reduced hours (the neighborhood one is closed Sundays and Mondays, and occaisonal “furlough” Fridays). I guess folks in Portland are wealthy enough to buy lots of books on a regular basis, elsewhere that place would be lucky to sell a magazine a week.
It seems like most of my trips to Powell’s I’ve been on a time limit. Randie, too… You wind up spending too little time in one section… The top floor, the art floor, never gets enough time! But really, I could spend an entire day at Powell’s and THAT would be great! Now if they had a Voodoo Donut right there in the bookstore…. that WOULD BE MAGICAL!
Just pitch a tent in Powell’s and stay there as long as humanly possible! It’s nearly impossible to leave.
…and I’m probably going to piss off a few people by saying this, but I wasn’t really impressed with Voodoo Donuts. It wasn’t bad, but after all the hype my friends were giving me about how they’re supposedly the best doughnuts ever, I was a bit let down with what was actually there. Just sayin’.
Dada… or a fort made of books.
Okay… Voodoo Donuts… You are not the first to be non-impressed with the Voodoo. Some people don’t see the “magic in the hole.” It’s okay. I don’t consume donuts with any regularity. In fact, the only time I really do is when I visit Portland. So they ARE pretty good to me…. and I like the whole wacky thing going on. Maybe they are just regular donuts (but I wouldn’t know… I am under some Voodoo spell).
