Big Ben
I love Big Ben… it’s probably my favorite British icon. I think it has something to do with a Paul McCartney and Wings song. Not sure… weird kid-association… Anyhoo… There’s a lovely little park near Big Ben with sculptures of famous Brit peoples… and perpetually camping protesters… I enjoyed sitting in that little park and listening to the chimes. Sigh… I think I’m missing London.
It’s a well guarded English secret that Big Ben is actually the teleporting headquarters of –
Oh um ahem no. I’m just joking. Yes. Disregard those words. . . I’m. . . mad! Yes. Totally bonkers. Yes.
Yes.
Ah, poor Rye, made his bed and now is lonely sleeping in it.
Sadder thing, he’s become a straight man for a guy who looks like a straight man.
Well, this is the first I’ve heard of Big Ben being anything other than a clock! BUT… you might be in “the inside.” Hmmmm.
Rye maybe a bit lonely, Stick….but he’s still in LONDON!
Your association with Paul McCartney and Wings is correct. Their album “London Town” features a black-and-white photo of the group, with Big Ben in the background.
Glad I’m not the only one who likes Paul and Wings! 😀
Robert… Are you kidding? I love Wings! Venus & Mars are alright tonight! Smiles upon you and your Wing-ey-ness.
My Big Ben association:
England swings like a pendulum do,
Bobbies on bicycles, two by two,
Westminster Abbey, the tower of Big Ben,
The rosy red cheeks of the little children.
“England Swings” by Roger Miller, 1966
Actually it’s “The Tower, Big Ben” – two things in London, in the song.
And of course we all know the Big Ben is *not* the clock tower but the bell within …
Ah, so right! As an anglophile and history buff, I should have caught that. Actually, I copypasta’d it from a lyrics site, so I can duck partial blame, LOL. But couldn’t the “tower of Big Ben” actually be correct, since Big Ben is the clock in the “clock tower”?
Meanwhile, the actual Tower of London, built on the foundation of the first Roman fortifications, is one of my favorite topics of study. If I ever did get to visit London, I could spend my entire time just roaming that edifice and the remnants of the early walled city.
Kona: love the poetry song blurb….
Ian…. yes, ever so right!
Kona… I have some lovely photos of the Tower of London…. if ever you stop in from your travels, I’d love to share!
