Art Plebes
Art supplies have lots of odd names… and to the newbie, they are foreign and strange… What’s an atomizer diffuser? Although spray cans of fixative have all but made them irrelevant, they still pop on supply lists causing confusion and angst (not everybody still carries them!)
Art supply quiz: Can you explain what each of the listed art supplies is and or what it does?
Uh…. the kneaded eraser…erases stuff? torchons… yeah I have no idea… I miss the days when the art supply list read: Crayons, Coloured penicls, Paper, Scissors, Glue. Period.
torchons are used to smudge charcoal or pastel… kneaded erasers are actually very rubbery and you “lift out” charcoal and stuff off the paper.
There’s no such thing as “just coloured pencils”… silly.
The only place I’m really drawing a blank (no pun intended) is the atomizer diffuser. Gouache is a watercolor paint, vine and willow charcoal are the soft stuff so I’m guessing (because I was only ever permitted to use those in my classes) that beech is the harder charcoal. Never had the pleasure of the crow quill, but I love my sable hair #7 brush, which I use with my india ink. Also, you forgot to mention the added benefit of the kneaded eraser: Stress relief! I’ve probably ruined more of those erasers with my tendency to stretch them, pull them apart and mold them back together. 🙂
those dang atomizers confuse everybodys…
I strike out on just about all of them. As an artist, I’m a good writer. *lol!* I betcha my artist Lily could tell you all of them, though!
Oh.. I started your strip after seeing your PW ad on my site. An excellent read! And I love your art style.
Thanks for the kind words… I will have to check out your site! I love to mingle with other artists… sounds like you are far away!
SPOILER ALERT —
For those who are still perplexed, an atomizer is basicly a breath powered air brush. Old tech; my grandmother had perfume/scent bottles with squezzbulb atomizers.
That’s right! You win a “golden squid” for your correct answer! (what that is, I’m not exactly sure)… thanks for playin’.
The pen without a nib?! What’s up with that? But I gotta say, I love crow quills. Says Crow.
My Color Theory prof. INSISTED we only use gouache for our projects! I hated using them, mostly because they were WAY too expensive for me at the time and ran out too quick!
My Color Theory prof. made us use a box of pre fab color chips that we could cut up and paste onto boards. It was pretty fun. I don’t know that they are even available anymore, but I kept mine.
Pre-fab???? My Color Theory prof made us paint every single one of our color chips and we had to match the adjacent and complementary color with near-pythagorean precision! 🙂
