Art Mamas
I imagine if this occurred in real life, there would be legal action. As it is, you mayest not draw or photograph the “real tree” with the intent to sell said reproduction, by penalty of a lawsuit. No kid. The “Pebbled Beach Company” owns the rights and will come after you. Notice that there is no depiction here. I do try to watch my behind.
That seems pretty extreme, “owning” the rights to a natural object as if it was a Disney character, but I don’t know why I’m surprised any more. Down here we have a beloved/maligned statue of a surfer called “The Cardiff Kook”, among other things. It gets regularly vandalized and/or decorated with funny/topical/political costumes. (“Google Images”; hysterical pics!) Would love to see the Art-o-Rama Mamas knit-bomb it.
A town in Alabama has a monument to the Boll Weevil. Enterprise celebrates this pest because it got them out of raising cotton and growing peanuts instead. The current monument is a replica to prevent vandalism and theft.

Kona… It does seem extreme, don’t it. “Brand” can be taken to a ridiculous level. I think the Pebbled Beach Co. is at that level.
When I lived in Del Mar… the Cardiff surfer didn’t yet exist… else I would have been out there “adding to the fun!” Now when I lived in Huntington Beach… they have “the naked surfer”… and you can bet there was a lot of fun to be had there!
Joe… Boll Weevil… If you didn’t know it was a monument to a boll weevil, you wouldn’t have guessed by looking at it. But a giant statue of a boll weevil would be creepy.
HA! I spent 2 years in Enterprise, AL during high school. The thing to do when the football team won an important game was to pour a box of tide and a bottle of blue food coloring (school color) into the fountain. The rotary and main street would get flooded with blue bubbles!!!
Berrubuzz,
I lived in Enterprise from 1984-85 and worked at Ft. Rucker. That’s how I know about the monument.
Oops! BERR-Y-BUZZ, sorry.
Now I want to go put a sweater on the mermaid statue in Stanley Park. (Vancouver, Canada)
..You’re such a bad influence! 😉
Instead of The Lonely Cypress you can feature The Lone Palm Tree in future strips. It can get wrapped up any which way you desire and the Pebble Beach Company folks will not be able to grumble squat.
Having been such an avid despiser of the color pink, it is a bit concerning of her ever greater use of that color.
Over here we’ve got a replica of the David statue out by our convention center and it was funny how an Evangelical Christian group came up with daily costumes for him, to mainly cover up his anotomical correctness, during a week they were here with kids in tow. Sadly, many locals were not amused and it became a big media news item.
Since the girls are so big on knitting for others and public visibility, they might give something like this a shot…

brig… Nice to see your replies, I added some too. Here’s to a Potter and book release weekend. Congrats Japan for beating the US in World Cup Soccer (sob, sniff, sniff) especially after all the natural and nuclear stuff you’ve been going through. Pooh will have to wait.
“Kelp! I need some mocha! Kelp! not just any..”, oh forget it.
The Art-O-Rama Mamas strike again! Is nothing sacred?
Dreamer… hee hee… Inspiration is a wonderful thing. I don’t mind inspiring silliness. Go dress the diver… it is a diver yes?
Berry: Ha! Blue bubbles! bubbles…
Stick… David… really? I saw the replica of David they have at Caesar’s Palace… and someday, I’ll see the original. But yah… he could use a knitted fig leaf or a speedo.
and cane sweaters… they’re like cozy’s for yer cane.
Dada… Nope!
stick: I have to admit that I, too, was quite happy for Japan. Our ladies have nothing to be ashamed of…look how amazingly well they did!
Brig: I’m not a knitter. If somebody decides to yarnbomb/yarnwrap some well-known local landmark, remember…I KNOW NOTHING. *whistling*
E/O… The women did good all the way through until the end when they managed just one successful kick out of four in the best of five, double-overtime elimination round (the Japanese got 3 successful out of 4 and took it). I just wish that they had tried kicking with their eyes…open.
Did you see the Potter finale yet?
