Art Game
Try this in your own sketchbooks! Send me a photo of the results!
One of the fun things I look forward to at Comic cons, is the art games cartoonists play in after show parties… Drink and Draws and Art Battles are so much fun! You can pit fine tooner minds against one another… usually with a buzz going on… to add to the competition.
If I were to do this toon over again, I would take out Squish and Randie from the last panel… it’s too crowded. Meh.
*Blink, blink*
Okay, going to have to try this with Megan.
The Auld Grump
Pardon me repeating myself from last time, but……
Who the heck THINKS of this stuff?!
You hurt my brain, Brig! You hurt it in strange ways. Thank you, it’s nice to be surprised from time to time without said surprise involving bullets, blades, or bludgeons!
On merging things – I once had a square dance club called the Barnyard Bumpers. Their badge had a picture of a rooster and a chicken dancing together. They merged with another club called the Gilroy Gliders, whose badge had a picture of a bi-plane on it. I suggested they create a new badge with a rooster as the pilot in the bi-plane, wearing a pair of goggles, and call themselves the Bump ‘N’ Gliders, but they wouldn’t have any of it…
“exquisite corpse” (“cadavre exquis” for allyou Francologues)
I’ll definitely pass this along to our artist son, Ben! 😀
The Scream and American Gothic are overdone. How about Girl With A Pearl Earring or The Sampling Officials/Syndics of the Drapers’ Guild?
Grump… be sure to share the results!
Lady Jenn… Cartoonists are a funny lot. We are weirdos and fun-sters… Just visit Minneapolis or Portland… both cities are crawling with tooners… the bars and the coffee shops are loaded with them! That means Drink & Draw! Sit in a coffee in Portland and you are bound to witness where this stuff comes from. Sorry to hurt your brain.
Rich… I have a fondness for chickens… and my brain had fun envisioning your comment. The chicken fondness comes from my mom’s affinity to the cheery little egg-mongers… that is why Randie’s mom loves the buc-bucs.
Beetles.. exquisite dead people?
Pete… lemmie know what Ben thinks! Stay warm!
Yat… You, are of course, correct… but they are universal and all are familiar… Can anyone name the actual painting I referenced in the last panel? But in other mash-ups… How about Puppy by Jeff Koons, German expressionism, and garden gnomes… GO!
brig,
Probably “Guernica”.
“Exquisite corpse” was a dadaist exercise (Wiki says surrealist, but cherck the dates).
You mentioned that you would take out Squish(sic) and Randie from the last panel. But if you had removed them and just shown the chicken, I might not have understood that it was an actual painting rather than, perhaps, their inner visualization of a bellowing abstract rooster. Having Spill holding the canvas there in the third panel lets me know that both time has passed and that the shrieking modernistic poultry is her work of art. In other words, I think removing the ladies might make it a better panel, but a lesser overall comic. In my opinion, that is.
Going to try it with charcoals – messy and fast. (Plus, Megan is trying to get me to sketch more… charcoals are where she has succeeded.)
The Auld Grump – finally past my tendency to cram everything into one corner of the sheet….
AG,
Kung-fu Tzu (Confucius to us Westerners) said “If I show you one corner, I should not need to point out the others.”
