Ah, the pleasant argument over a relaxing dinner. I am certain many an artist in a French cafe somewheres in Paris had much the same conversation…. with an escargot suggested in someones lap.
And La Carmencita was truly an engaging painting… and she was every bit as brazen and taunting as Ryan says… but I thought she was mesmerizing.
I’ve ended up with egg on my face after making a comment, but I’ve never had scalding hot lasagne dumped on my lap. I think I would have remembered that.
btw: La Carmencita

That would be a waste of a good pasta dish.
Anyway, YouTube has a video of Carmencita in action – apparently, she was the first person to appear in front of an Edison motion-picture camera.
Hmm. Backtracking to Van Gogh (thankfully, he’s mentioned in this strip, so I don’t think I’m committing a faux pas), I just found, via BoingBoing, this – 28 Van Gogh paintings visualised as pie charts, showing the five most common colours in each as a percentage… (I didn’t link to BoingBoing or the blog article, in case comments in either become NSFW.)
<Astragali,
According to the comments in Joe’s link despite the attribution, that may be some other dancer wearing a similar (the same ?) dress.
I kinda preferr William Merrit Chase’s painting of her…

Wow! Great links, Squiddies all! I LOVE the Van Gogh pies…. and the “other Carmencita” (a much more jovial portrait)… and the film was fascinating!
Joe: I think I’d prefer egg on my face to lasagna in my lap… But that’s just me.
hmm…somehow i can hear ryan doing his dialog in this strip with an “outrrrrrageous french accent” (thank you, monty python)
