Coffee Fairy
Cinderella was one of my favorite kid stories… still is… girl gets dissed by crummy step-people, makes friends with mice, girl finds out she has a friggin’ fairy God mother, and thru a series of complicated events, girl gets handsome prince, etc, etc. (Slight tangent question: What the heck was the Fairy God mother doing the whole time Cindy was down and out? Is she like a genie and only shows up the one time? Then BOOM, she’s gone!)
Anyhoo, yah… the thought of having a Fairy God Mother was cool. Someone to come rescue you when you were troubled. So a Coffee Fairy… Ryan is sort of like a fairy God mother… yah? Bringing happy cups of coffee when needed…
Well, you know, the Fairy Godmother can’t go mollycoddling her charge, otherwise Cinders would bleat for help the moment she broke a nail… It’s only when nothing short of a miracle is needed that FG steps in.
It’s either that, or she was horribly over-committed (since it’s not just Cinderella who has a fairy godmother…)
Goodmorning Brig, or is it Bridgett?
I followed your link from Punch and Pie. It’s taken the better part of the week to catch up. I haven’t gone to the REALLY old strips yet, but I plan to. This is great! You seem to put a lot of yourself into the comic. I’m not an artist, but I know what I like. Ryan and I have something in common in that I like to work with words more than pictures. In other words, I write bad jokes, stories and rewrite song lyrics.
I love Mondays! I don’t read my web comics over the weekend, so when I get into the office on Monday morning, I get a TRIPLE shot of Squid Row. (And the Sunday comic is a DOUBLE shot all on its own.)
Ryan is a truly thoughtful friend. He provides cheerfully and freely what he know Randi is hoping to be able to ask for anyway. We all need a coffee FG like Ryan. (And Ryan needs one, too!)
Or maybe Cindy’s FG had been sick, like Carence (the guardian angel in Capra’sIt’s a Wonderful Life).
Astragali: mollycoddling… one of them Brit words… love it! And, yes, you is right.
Joe: WELCOME to The Row! It is both, but you can call me Brig (pronounced Bridge)… I am so happy you’ve come to the neighborhood! I am glad you’re enjoying the strip. I do put a lot of myself in the comic, but also leave enough room for creative license (I don’t actually like Bologna, Ketchup on White… or BKWs… but when you go to the “way back toons”, you’ll see).
Pete. Triple Shots of Squid (sounds like squid shooters to me…) Heeeyuuuck. Yah, maybe Ryan needs a girlfriend… hmmmmm. I hear a jealous plot coming along.
BeetleB: I love Clarence! There should be a cartoon something where FGMs and GAs (guardian angels) get together for happy hour… and like, let it all out over “squid shooters” or something! hee hee.
Thanks Bri(d)g(e)
;^)
I’m expanding from my comfort zone by registering and commenting on more web comics. Two years ago I started with Pibgorn at the GoComics site. Very funny story about how I got my screen name(maybe later). More recently I’ve been posting at Wapsi Square. Ever hear of it? Heading off to work soon. Enjoy the day!
Hmm… I too thought mollycoddle was a uniquely British word, but not only is this not the case (Theodore Roosevelt used it when referring to pacifists, according to a New York Times book on the First World War), but there was a 1920s film (“The Mollycoddle“) starring Douglas Fairbanks and Wallace Beery.
However, I suspect that it’s only the British (not just a word nerd like me) that uses it in modern-day speech 🙂
Joe: I floated around Wapsi Square awhile back… good artwork there! And yes, you’ll have to let us in on the Minotaur…
…come to think of it, Astragali… where’d your name come from? ……….Mollycoddle… mollycoddle…. I just like saying it.
man, I wish I had a coffee fairy. someone who always made my coffee just right… *sigh* bliss.
Ryan with a girlfriend? What is Randie, chopped liver? Ryan is so protective of Randie and Randie already leans on him so much that it almost like they were engaged. Looks like an excellent match to me. Ryan seems to be paying for most of Randie’s food and coffee anyway.
Of course that would come as a blow to poor Mouse, for whom I have the utmost sympathy. But Randie is never going to see any virtues in him, no matter how many he has. Been there, done that, lost the T-shirt.
Ah, that weird place where friendship and love cross-over… or shouldn’t or might… or ought to… I covered that odd place a long time ago with a French Culinary Student named Maurice. It’s in the far reaches of the Squid Archive… Randie falls head over heels… and so…. well… I will dig out a link or go to the “older squids” link at the top of this page.
