The last quote there by Bierce was one I had to think on for a while. It is cynical. Switch “disappointment” and “opportunity” around and it makes sense.

Sometimes our own negative thinking can get the best of us. A tinge of melancholy can turn to all out depression.
I have a tendency to have food guilt. I will eat me some tasty dessert and feel the strong sense of remorse afterwards. Sigh. Tales of a food addict.
