Another Reason to go to West End…
Chemo Diaries…
This is the work of Suzka. She is a long time Sand City artist and a friend. Suzka, or Susan Collins, is battling cancer… And she is showing a series of paintings she is calling the Chemo Diaries. Her work is hanging at The Independent (the HUGE building in Sand City …can’t miss it). And the opening is tonight. Come to West End Celebration this weekend and see her series or visit her Facebook page (Chemodiaries) to read more about Suzka and her amazing spirit.
Wow, I’m gonna need to get me one of them facebook pages.
Anyhow, those paintings do look interesting and I’m psyched about being able to check them out. Only, one thing in the Herald’s coverage bothered me about them. Seems her cancer struggle left her with a disconnect from her normal art style. So she painted over all of her existing paintings with a coat of white and created her new works on top of them. Seems like a destruction of art for art’s sake, and I’m not sure how I feel about that.
I happily met Suzka yesterday and found her a to be a complete joy and delight to behold. Her art is primarily a very large number of giant-sized journal notes and sketches and looks amazing arranged in a big/huge grouping. Also good news is that she saved her best paintings from a fate of being coated with white and repainted. I sure have got frustrated and crumpled up some failed art attempts in the past (highly crumple-able ballpoint draws on sketch paper), so I can sort’a relate.
If you can catch the West-End Fest you should go and see her showing, and say hi to Bridgett at her Squid tent too. If not, there’s always the link above.
