Steampunk has been around for a while. It’s funny how now you’re beginning to see it creep into movies more and more. The last Sherlock Holmes movie had a good bit of it. But I first saw it in Wild, Wild West (the movie)… I thought it odd then… not so much now. In fact, I’m growing pretty fond of it.
Thinking of Randie dressed up as Agatha Heterodyne and it’s giving me a warm fuzzy feeling. 😀

Sorry but it isn’t.
Why does the name make me think of freshly ironed punk rock with steam coming out of it? or at least, one steamed up punk?
Steam punk is real science fiction, since the definition of science fiction literature is: “If you take the science fiction out of the story, can the story still stand?”
Steampunk has been around the scifi lit conventions at least since I started the circuit about ten years ago, and it’s been growing at a respectable rate. It’ll never be a the primary subgenre in scifi lit, but certainly a significant one. Tee Morris is a good friend of mine and is considered by many to be among the leading authors of steampunk. There is an appeal to steampunk (when done correctly, of course) because of the blend of past/present/future/alternate history. It returns the readers to the years when everything was seen as new and exciting, when an individual could create equipment and gadgets and make a difference.
Just because it’s speculative science fiction from a Victorian-era perspective doesn’t make it ‘not real’ 😛 And yes, Randie would be adorable as the Lady Heterodyne, tho I’m not sure she has the curves to be convincing….

Goodness… this is quite the conversation… I am enjoying it. It has sparked discussion betwixt Nelson (enthusiastic SCI-FI reader and Jules Verne know-er person). He calls Steampunk… “Science fiction in an altered reality.”

Rob… Next Year, I will be visiting Nantes, France. It is the birthplace of Jules Verne. It should be fascinating as they are proud of their native son and the place has many tributes… including steampunk animals… like the giraffe.
Oh man, I remember having to go to the library for the internet. Good times….or not.
I guess it”s an acquired taste. I have yet to really get into it myself, but it looks interesting enough.
Heck, I’m just looking forward to seeing the Squid cast in steampunk designs!
I like Steampunk a heck of a lot more than those silly, totally antihistorical Ren Faire things.
