Last Saturday, after a fine day of exploring the Carmel Art Fest, I was bouncing around the internet (thanks to a late afternoon coffee and a rather ample piece of Chocolate Granache cake). I found a couple of things that got my attention.
I stumbled upon the International Cartoonist Conspiracy… an open cartoonist organization meant to inspire cartoonists to get together and do their thing… cartoon. I liked that there was no membership, no rules per say… and no hoops to jump thru. So I signed in (there’s a blog and a message board and what not)… and am ready to encourage others to participate.
So first off is the Making Mini-Comics Day… which is May 26th… this Saturday. What are mini comics? Well, they are comics in a small format (click the link for more info). So at my local coffee establishment, Rollick’s in Salinas… I will be at a table making the comics from 10 am to noon on Saturday. If you are local, like me, stop by… bring some pens and some paper (regular printer paper works well) and make yersef a comic of mini-ness. Be not afraid. It will be fun.
If you are not local, like me… find yersef a local coffee establishment of your preference or a center of artiness… and conspire to the mini-comics with a group of pals or whatever… Go to the above links for more details. Most of all… have fun!
I was having lunch the other day with my pal, Keith…and Harold joined us, of course. We decided to take a tour around nearby “Trader Moe’s.” It didn’t take long for Harold to find the beverage section. We started with the Shade Grown Ground Espresso… and then, somehow, we wound up in the adult beverage area… how’d that happen?
I have to say that Trader’s is one of my favorite places to shop. There’s always something interesting on the shelves… especially the cheese shelves… I love me some sheep and goat cheese!
Yes, my-Spill is based on my pal, (real) Jill Spill, whom I met in Carmel at her shop/studio in the Barnyard Shopping Center. Spill has since moved on from Carmello-by-the-Ocean… and is planting roots in the Big Apple. But you can see why I had to “cartoonify” her… she screams artist. I’m afraid my rendition doesn’t do Spill justice though. You might say that, she’s a REAL CHARACTER!
Here’s her new shopping site… Have a look around… It’s a visual sensation! As is she… http://spillart.myshopify.com/
Hey, Squiddies! Just a blurb here to thank those who came out for the First Friday Silliness at the Cartoonery this past Friday. I must say, these little soirees are just a hoot! I want to thank stick-fig for the treats, Terry for the excellent wine (it was Frenchy!), Chris’ mom (for the culture), and Patrick for the amazing Mother Goose & Grimm book. It perturbs me that as a fan of said comic strip, this is my first book of Grimm. How is MG&G not in my library???? Thank you for adding it, Patrick. I have been enjoying Mike Peters’ amazing drawing style and his sick humor all weekend! And of course, I have to thank Judy for making her amazing cookies… gah… I had so many!!!
And thank you all … who blessed me with your presence… it would not be a party without partiers. And another big thank you to those who purchased Squid stuff. It helps with the overall stayin’ in business thing.
