Talk Squish
Just after I wrote this toon, Judy, a public school teacher, was talking with a colleague, who said that he put himself thru college… by bartending. Art and life… in the mirror.

Maybe it’s not a coincidence. Quick! Write a comic about finding a huge sack of gold, to test it out. What have you got to lose?
Also, can you tell Maka Koa that I’m sorry for calling him a jerk? I keep getting horrible nightmare visions when I try to sleep.
It is indeed a sad reflection upon what our society values most that teachers qualify for foodstamps, yet we pay sports stars and celebrities obscene amounts of money for them to squander.
Wait a sec… She went to GRAD school with the intention of becoming a public school teacher? She could have just as well gone after undergrad school.
I know people who worked at supermarkets (union jobs) while going to college…and are still there. It may be the salary, but it’s also about finding your niche, something you really like and enjoy, achieving a comfort level, getting settled and not wanting to relocate out of town or state if job availabilities so dictate. I also knew of, but did not personally know, a friend of some law school buddies who put herself through their law school by dancing at a strip club. Although I never went to see her dance (kicks self now), she did look pretty good with clothes on.
That being said, bartenders are a combination of server and entertainer. Some make great tips in packed, now-trendy bars, while others eek out an existance tending to sparse, no longer-trendy bars.
yeah, I don’t think summers off is even a perk with such low wages.
Watch out for this woman! She can stuff your head into that beer bottle before you even begin to start crying!
Dave…. Great idea… but maybe Ryan gets some interest in his secret novel and he gets a book deal and a then a nationally syndicated column in newspapers all over the country. That’s kinda like a sack of gold, right?
And as far as Maka Koa… you’ll have to send him an offering wrapped in a tea leaf…. or maybe a your firstborn or something.
DCS… don’t even get me started. What do we value in life? We supposedly value education but nobody wants to fund it… Why is it schools get cut when there is a budget problem? And yet people will fork out gobs of money for sports event tickets (which pay for ridiculous salaries)… and when schools need… OH never mind … I’m getting worked up.
stick… I had a pal at UCSC who got her degree in art and went to Grad school to get her teaching credential. She went on to teach in Art and Photography.
I like bartenders and baristas… for that very reason.
Jack… nope… it means 2 months without pay.
Dada… You read this character well! She’ll knock you down, baby!
Offspring of teachers here. Mom taught first grade, dad was uni prof., back in the days when you better love it cause it wasn’t going to pay anything like what it cost to get the job. Now they at least have unions and make a little better money.
I didn’t finish college, but I did learn the value of education; it’s much more than the kind of income it makes possible. It makes life worth living; makes us appreciate literature, art, music, history and civilization in general. In short, it makes us better people. Teachers get that, and they want to pass it on. Hail to teachers!
Kona… AGREED! Hail to teachers! Teachers are heroes.
Brig/Judy,
Out of pure sympathy, I added my: “Not EVEN in Vegas” as my final drink tonight. Please let me know how it placed among the “Tiki” or “Kapu” drinks that you tried tonight!
We value education, but all too many “representatives” do not – an ignorant public is easier to lead by the nose because they believe your mantras and slogans, rather than doing the research and learning for themselves. More an issue on one side than the other IMHO (not gonna say which is which, not gonna start that fight today) but an issue for both nonetheless.
I think it’s time for us to quit dozing and letting our hands slip off the leash. Time to reign them in and remind them who they work for – US. Let’s get the focus back on education and off of sticking our noses in everyone else’s business in the world, eh?
Went to college as a teacher–music, really useless degree, BTW–and found that I was totally not cut out to be a teacher, in my last semester unfortunately. I truly wish now I’d done something much more useful, like business school (secretarial back then, computer now). I was drawn to either librarian or geology. I wound up doing a lot of office work and it turned to be something I’m good at. I’m learning to do more with computers now. You can teach an old dog new tricks!
Payscale.com says bartenders range from 12 to 47 grand a year.
Elementary school teachers 25 to 63 grand per year.
Indeed.com has bartenders’ average salaries in Salinas at $53,000, teachers’ salaries in Salinas, CA average $54,000.
But I don’t know how to read these things. Numbers, eh.
Meh. I always wonder where they get their numbers or how they are tabulated. I think they tend to get a bit of spin on them based on who’s paying to make their fields look good for job fairs.
I have yet to have a job where any sort of “official” payscale comparisons didn’t make it look like I should be earning twice what I actually am getting, or more. And yes, that’s even if I specify by region. So I quit looking at those a while ago.
